Care Instructions

100% human hair is an investment, and it rewards care. These are the routines our stylists use behind the chair — follow them and your unit will look freshly installed for years, not months.

Before the first install

Setting the foundation

Co-wash before install
Wash your unit once with a sulphate-free, hydrating conditioner before the first install. Factory treatments protect the hair in transit; a quick co-wash brings back its natural softness and movement.
Seal the wefts
Apply a light weft sealer or fabric glue along the weft tracks before the first install. This prevents shedding and keeps the hair density even for years, not months.
Leave the lace to us
Every Thewigsbar unit ships with professionally pre-plucked lace. Avoid bleaching the knots yourself — a properly tinted lace adhesive spray or a neutralising gel on the knots is enough to disappear the lace.
Trim with intent
If you customise the hairline, cut into the lace with small, angled movements rather than across. Never cut the lace while the unit is on your head.

Daily routine

Keep it flawless

Brush from the ends up
Detangle with a wide-tooth comb or a loop brush, starting at the ends and working towards the roots. Never brush from the root down while the hair is dry — this is the fastest way to loosen the wefts.
Keep heat below 180°C
Straighteners and tongs should stay at or under 180°C (355°F) and always with a heat protectant. One or two passes are enough — repeated passes on the same section dull the cuticle.
Let deep waves spring back
Curly and wavy textures keep their pattern best when finger-coiled damp. Scrunch in a leave-in curl cream and allow the unit to air-dry — brushing a deep wave when dry turns the pattern loose.
Sleep protected
Wrap the unit in a satin or silk bonnet, or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases absorb the hair's moisture overnight and cause friction frizz by morning.

Washing & conditioning

The weekly ritual

Wash every 7–14 wears
Human hair does not need daily washing. Every 7–14 wears (or every 2–3 weeks on a standing unit) is the professional rhythm — over-washing strips the natural oils faster than they can be restored.
Use lukewarm water, never hot
Rinse the unit under lukewarm water with the hair flowing in one direction, root to tip. Hot water swells the cuticle and encourages tangling and frizz.
Shampoo the roots, condition the ends
Apply a small amount of sulphate-free shampoo to the wefts and roots only. Slide a moisture-rich conditioner from mid-length to the ends and let it sit for 5–10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Deep-condition weekly on curls
Curly, wavy and deep-wave textures benefit from a weekly deep-conditioning mask with a steam cap for 15 minutes. Straight and bone-straight textures need it every two weeks.
Blot — don't wring
Press the water out gently with a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt. Wringing or twisting stretches the wefts and frizzes the strands permanently.

Storage & rest

Between installs

A mannequin keeps the style
Store a standing unit on a mannequin head or wig stand at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. This holds the shape, the lace and the hairline between installs.
A satin bag protects a resting unit
For longer breaks, brush the unit, braid it loosely and place it in a satin or silk bag inside its original box. Never store it damp — moisture in a closed bag invites mildew and odour.
Keep it away from heat sources
Radiators, kitchen steam and hairdryers standing in the same drawer all dry the hair out. Cool, dry and dark is the rule.
Refresh before re-install
Before the next install, co-wash the unit, let it air-dry completely and mist it lightly with a lightweight oil from mid-length to ends. It will look as fresh as the day it arrived.

Stylist's pro tips

Match the cap to your routine
If you install every 2–3 weeks, a 13×4 or 13×6 lace front gives you the most styling freedom. If you rotate units weekly, a glueless wear-and-go cap saves your edges and your lace — ask us before checkout and we will match the cap to how you actually wear it.
Always order one texture richer
Human hair relaxes slightly over the first few installs. If you are torn between two curl patterns, choose the tighter one — it will settle into exactly the look you fell in love with in the photos.
Melting the lace, the gentle way
Hold the lace down with a satin scarf for 10–15 minutes after applying adhesive rather than blasting it with a dryer. Direct heat on fresh lace is the number one cause of lifted edges and shiny lace by week two.
Bring dull hair back to life
When the unit starts to look dry but still moves well, it is thirsty, not finished: one deep-conditioning mask with a steam cap, rinse cool, and a pea-sized drop of light oil from mid-length to ends. Two of these sessions usually restore the shine completely.
Protect the knots, extend the lifespan
Never scratch the lace with fingernails or a tail comb, even when it itches. Tap or press with a pad instead — scratching breaks the knots at the hairline and is the fastest way to turn a 3-year unit into a 1-year unit.
Time your colour with a pro
Our units are 100% human hair and can be coloured, but bleach should be handled by a professional colourist — box dye and DIY bleach lift the cuticle unevenly and permanently change how the hair takes moisture. If you want a toned or balayage look, message us first and we will guide the shade.
